🎄 Welcome, everyone to ‘Christmas around the Piano’…a nostalgic musical journey!🎄

Day 1 - December 1, 2025:

Today, as we step into December 2025, let's bring in the festive season with a spin on the carol ‘O Christmas Tree’. Is it even related to Christmas? Well, grab a cup of cocoa, cozy up with your loved ones, and let’s unwrap the history and meaning of this timeless holiday classic together. 🎶✨

'O Christmas Tree' is the English version of the German carol ‘O Tannenbaum’. It is based on a 16th-century Silesian traditional folk song, later adapted by Composer Melchior Franck.

In 1824, Leipzig organist and teacher, Ernst Anschütz composed its modern German lyrics and the song was called ‘Ach Tannenbaum’. The English translations to ‘O Christmas Tree’, came in much later.

The original lyrics were not at all about Christmas, but in fact, praises for the fir tree's evergreen qualities as a symbol of faithfulness and constancy, which we see as a recurring theme in the original folk song.

In the 19th century, as the tradition of decorating fir trees became more popular, the song became associated with Christmas.

Quick Facts!

The Christmas tree tradition has roots in various ancient customs. Many cultures used evergreen plants during winter solstice celebrations, believing they held magical properties that warded off evil spirits and symbolized life amidst winter's darkness.

The modern Christmas tree, as we know it, began to take shape in Germany during the 16th century, where trees were decorated with fruits, nuts, and candles.

As we enter the festive season, I felt it fitting that my schoolmates and I sing this Carol, in reminiscence of our time singing and making music together, especially during Christmas, like we did back in childhood.

We invite you to gather around your Christmas Tree with you loved ones, and sing-along with us, as you decorate it.

May you too step into the Christmas season as you listen to this carol, and let it remind us of hope, love, joy, faithfulness, constancy, and family, during this season.

I do hope you have enjoyed reading about this carol, as much as I have enjoyed presenting this to you.

Thank you for joining me on this festive journey! Wishing you and your loved ones, a season filled with light, laughter, love, and of course, MUSIC! 🌟🎄
