It was written by Mark Lowry (a Christian comedian and singer) in 1984, while preparing a Christmas program for a Christian university in Virginia. He imagined what he would ask Mary if he could sit with her — questions filled with awe about the child she carried. Buddy Greene (a touring musician with the Gaither Vocal Band) set it to music in 1991.
This song has traveled from a simple Christmas program idea to a global classic recorded by artists across every genre.
It was first recorded officially by Michael English on his 1991 debut solo album. At the time, Lowry, Greene, and English were all connected through the Gaither Vocal Band, which helped the song spread quickly in Christian music circles.
