🎄 Welcome, to ‘Christmas around the Piano’…a nostalgic musical journey!🎄
Day 8 - December 8, 2025:
Schubert’s “Ave Maria” wasn’t originally a setting of the Catholic prayer. It was composed in 1825 as “Ellens dritter Gesang” (Ellen’s Third Song), part of a seven-song cycle based on Sir Walter Scott’s 1810 poem The Lady of the Lake.

The original German lyrics were a translation by Adam Storck, and the song was written as a prayer to the Virgin Mary by the character Ellen Douglas, who is hiding in a cave and seeking divine protection.

It was catalogued as D.839, Op. 52 No. 6, composed for voice and piano, and features a lyrical, flowing melody that evokes reverence and intimacy.

I do hope you have enjoyed reading about this carol, as much as I have enjoyed presenting this to you.
